Motorcycle on the Backroads of Paso Robles

Cyclists planning a Paso Robles road biking excursion will find both challenging and rewarding options. Western Paso is more mountainous, with light traffic and lots of grand views. East of town, Paso Robles cycling routes tend to be flatter and itineraries highlight peaceful countryside. In a region that’s rich with wineries, you can easily build tasting stops into any pedal-powered tour. Here are a few top routes to try, each ranging from about 25 to 50 miles in length.

The Chimney Rock route starts at Downtown City Park, travels to the outskirts of Paso Robles, and loops through the rural hills west of town. You’ll pass a few small lakes and about 10 wineries along the way.

The Bovine Classic

Tour of Paso

The Tour of Paso welcomes cyclists of all skill levels for 50- or 26-mile wine country routes followed by a lunch and celebration. Expect climbs, dust and plenty of excitement, whether you chose the Big Bovine (long), Happy Bovine (medium) or Baby Bovine (short) course. The gravel event includes prizes for all three routes as well as other special honors for riders. Bovine Classic proceeds benefit the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers, a group that expands and maintains San Luis Obispo County trails.

Wildflower Century

For more than five decades, the Wildflower Century has taken participants on challenging rural routes through the ranches, vineyards and oak woodlands around Paso Robles. Riders start in Creston, 15 miles southeast of Paso, and follow multiple paths ranging from 35 to 80 miles. Hosted by the San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club and limited to 1,000 riders each year, the gathering raises funds for local charities and community organizations. Wildflower Century is not a timed race – it simply celebrates a shared love of cycling.

Mountain Biking Trails

The Bovine Classic

A collection of rugged Paso Robles mountain biking trails might be one of the region’s best-kept secrets. The trails at Heritage Ranch, which is near Lake Nacimiento about 15 miles from downtown Paso, include loops and out-and-back options surrounded by nature. Most of the routes are two miles or less, with elevation changes under 500 feet. They range from low-key, relatively flat trails to single-track sections with quick climbs. Depending on where you ride, you might see bald eagles, elks and deer, plus plenty of oak trees, dry creek beds and scenic views.

The Pump Track at Barney Schwartz Park

Pick up some speed at Barney Schwartz Park, where a new pump track accommodates both beginners and intermediate riders. The small asphalt loop features connected rollers and banked turns that let bikers can ride continuously, without pedaling. Outlined by the same designers of the Tokyo Olympic Skatepark and the Vans Off the Wall Skatepark in Huntington Beach, it’s popular among youngsters on scooters and Strider bikes, too.
