The Russian Connection featuring Paul Merkelo and Robert Cassidy
Symphony of the Vines is excited to be working with two virtuoso performers - Paul Merkelo, trumpet, and Robert Cassidy, piano, featured during The Russian Connection.
Paul Merkelo, an international performing and recording artist, is renowned as one of the finest trumpet players of his generation. He has been the Principal trumpet with the Montréal Symphony Orchestra since 1995. In 1999, he was appointed Canadian musical ambassador to China for the inauguration of the Montreal Park in Shanghai, and as soloist with the Shanghai Broadcast Orchestra in a national telecast. Merkelo made his New York debut at Lincoln Center with the New World Symphony Orchestra and Michael Tilson Thomas in 1998. He has also worked with conductors Leonard Bernstein, Charles Dutoit, Lorin Maazel, Sir Georg Solti and Valery Gergiev.
Robert Cassidy often appears in concert as a soloist and chamber musician, most recently on a solo recital tour in Cleveland, New York, and Vienna, and in a chamber performance at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. He has been presented on radio stations WFMT in Chicago (Dame Myra Hess Series), WRUW, WCLV and WCPN in Cleveland, WKSU in Kent, Ohio, and WNYC in New York (Around New York).
The Russian Connection program centers around the composers at the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music in Russia. Alexander Glazunov was the teacher of Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergei Prokofiev. Merkelo is traveling to Russia in late January to record this program with the Moscow Symphony.
“I don’t think there’s any easy Shostakovich piece out there,” said Cassidy. “The combination of trumpet, piano and orchestra makes this piece very unique in the repertoire. People should come to experience it’s originality, as well as learn more about the composer. Shostakovich led a difficult life under Stalin. His music is emotional, at times stark, and very powerful. This Concerto reflects these aspects of Shostakovich the man.”
