Experience the haunting and lyrical themes of Beethoven's "Ghost" trio and Dvorák's "Dumky" trio performed by virtuoso Bay area pianist Dmitriy Cogan and outstanding local musicians Grace Seng, violin, and Hilary Clark, cello. We will also feature a trio composed by Mary Bianco, a prolific composer who lives right here in Paso Robles! The music will be performed in the beautiful (and lovely sounding) barrel room at Cass Winery, Sunday, October 14, 4 pm.
The All-Music Guide states that "because of its strangely scored and undeniably eerie-sounding slow movement, Beethoven's work was dubbed the 'Ghost' Trio. The name has stuck with the work ever since. The ghostly music may have had its roots in sketches for a Macbeth opera that Beethoven was contemplating at the time. It was first published in 1809.
The manic-depressive nature of Dvorák's most celebrated chamber score, Dumky, derives not from the psychology of a suffering artist, but from Ukrainian folk music. Dvorák combined the various elements ending up with a format that alternates slow, melancholy, melismatic sections with fast Slavic dances.
Mary Bianco’s trio composition was commissioned by Gary Berkson, conductor of the Peninsula Symphony in Southern California. “Gary requested a lighthearted, easy on the audience, not too long composition,” says Mary. He suggested that Mary give the heavy lifting to the violin and cello. “My intent is to provide an easy on the ears, fun and rhythmically - even somewhat jazzy contrast to classical trio writing. Nothing complicated about the melodic themes, and likely it is evident that my background is that of a percussionist.”
