Piano Recital featuring Torsten Juul-Borre
Torsten Juul-Borre, a Templeton resident, is a pianist who travels extensively in the United States and Europe, often in Denmark, performing popular solo concerts. Symphony of the Vines presents two piano recitals this year on Saturday, November 16, 1p.m., Grace Bible Church, Arroyo Grande and Sunday, November 17, 4 pm. Cass Winery, Paso Robles.
The program will also feature a “Student Spotlight” by Albert Zhang, an 11 year old student from Atascadero Middle School.
Juul-Borre’s parents were Danish immigrants. He spent much of his childhood living in Templeton (he graduated from Templeton High School), as well as Denmark. At the age of 17, Juul-Borre was accepted into the oldest institution of musical education in Denmark, the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music. The Conservatory’s prestigious seven-year program included all facets of music and piano performance. Juul-Borre studied with Arne Skjold Rasmussen, renowned interpreter of Beethoven and Carl Nielsen, and with the internationally known pianist and accompanist Kjell Olsson.
Juul-Borre has performed with the San Luis Obispo Symphony Orchestra, Cuesta College’s “Portraits in Music,” and toured with the Community Concerts Association.
This will be the 10th year Juul-Borre has played a recital for Symphony of the Vines, a chamber ensemble and symphony orchestra. As he thought about his program, a bit of a Schubert sonata popped in his head, but which one was it? “There is a Band I, Band II, and Band III. Sure enough, it was in my Band I book,” he explained. “And that’s good because it’s the only volume I own!”
He will play composer Frank Shubert’s Sonata in B-Flat Major. “Studying the music, I have to say that it is a masterful achievement to get 38 minutes of beauty out of four initial notes.” Also on the program are two renditions of Jeax d’Eau by composers Frank Liszt and Maurice Ravel.
Juul-Borre also enjoys teaching piano lessons and one of his pupils, Albert Zhang, 11, has been chosen by Symphony of the Vines to have a solo performance. Student Spotlight is a program that gives an advanced student an opportunity to work with professional musicians and perform in a professional venue.
Tickets to the “Torsten Juul-Borre Piano Recital” range from $15 - $30 and students K-12 are free with a paid adult thanks to a sponsorship by Carolyn and Jim Brescia. The concert is also sponsored by Aurelia Wick. Tickets are available at the door an hour before the concert and online at www.my805tix.com or www.symphonyofthevines.org.
