Wrapped in Holiday Spirit: The 23rd Annual Vine Street Victorian Showcase
Thursday, December 17, 2009
Greetings, and happy holidays, everyone! I’m Ashley Fischer, your purveyor of all things Paso Robles! I will regularly update this blog with insider tips and information about local events, chefs, wineries, and the places to stay while enjoying all things Paso, and more. I’m thrilled to be a member of this community, and I can’t wait to share with you the exciting things that happen in Paso Robles throughout the year. So, if you take a stroll through our beautiful downtown or visit one of over 200 Paso Robles wineries and you spot me with my camera, don’t be afraid to stop and smile into the lens!
The holiday season in Paso Robles is no small affair, and this charming city loves to celebrate. No wonder more and more people are making Paso Robles their California vacation package of choice. One of the largest, and most eagerly anticipated holiday events that brings people flocking into the streets of downtown Paso Robles each December is the Vine Street Victorian Showcase.
This holiday festival features 13 blocks of beautifully decorated Victorian homes that line Vine Street and is a favorite holiday tradition for many Central Coast California natives. It has brought travelers from far and wide who are in need of a hearty dose of holiday spirit to our city for the past 23 years.
This year’s Vine Street Victorian Showcase was the first I had ever attended, and I was delighted with what I found. As soon as the sky darkened, the Vine Street homeowners flipped their switches and lit up thousands of glittering lights that covered their intricately decorated homes.
For kids and kids at heart (such as myself), I found the main attraction of the evening (aside from the houses and the parade, and the people, of course) as soon as I turned the first corner: free cotton candy! Many local clubs, schools, and non-profit organizations lined the streets distributing an array of free tempting holiday treats, from delightfully warm cups of cocoa and cider to homemade Christmas cookies and the aforementioned cotton candy.
After having my fill of the spun sugary confection, I wandered along the street and enjoyed the rest of the sights, and in particular, the sounds. Paso Robles, for my two cents, is one of the most amazing California travel destinations around. The Vine Street Victorian Showcase is one of the prime reasons why. There was no shortage of live entertainment, from a local choir who sang a beautiful rendition of “O Holy Night” to a local musician who sat on a beautiful wrap-around porch and sang heartfelt acoustic versions of holiday classics (I caught an excellent rendition of “Jingle Bell Rock”).
More than the treats and the music and the sheer spectacle of watching people wander through the glistening street wrapped up in Christmas lights, my favorite part of the evening was taking part in a holiday event that was enjoyed by children, parents and grandparents, locals and visitors, and those just passing through. The Vine Street Victorian Showcase is a prime example of one of the many fun, free events happening throughout the year, and one that is a part of the unique, utterly Paso Robles experience.
If you live here, be sure to enjoy Paso Robles often. If not, come enjoy the sounds, sights, and tastes of a California vacation in Paso Robles. With more than 1,000 guest rooms available, visitors find the Paso Robles hotel or other accommodation that is right for them.
